A Look At Amsterdam From The Water

Amsterdam canal

Amsterdam isn’t my favorite city even though I have given it a couple of chances. We just don’t click and that’s fine, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t find parts of this city beautiful and even alluring. There is a certain romance to Amsterdam, the former hub of a commercial empire that at one time controlled vast swaths of the planet. You can see this wealth and power sprinkled around town, the gilders are reflected in stately homes and exquisite manors that dot the city’s extensive canal system. It’s enough to make this Amsterdam hater into not a lover, but at least an admirer and no where are these architectural highlights better seen than from the canals that criss-cross the city.

  1. I didn’t really click with Amsterdam either, it just didn’t have the same buzz that makes some other European cities irresistible. But completely agree there were parts of the city that were lovely, especially the canals. I’d like to go back to give it a second chance, and actually do a canal boat tour this time! Great post.

  2. Reviewing these pictures reminds me why Amsterdam is one of the…..
If not “THE” most beautiful cities in the world.

I have experienced it from the canals, a must do !

  3. I’m not a great fan of Amsterdam either but I’ll give it another go next month when I’m visiting friends – that may bring another spin to my enjoyment of the place, I hope so :)
