I have many favorite places around the world where I love to just relax and revel in being a tourist. One of my favorite spots is Montmartre, in Paris.
Montmartre is a top tourist spot not only for its amazing, and free (I’m looking at you Eiffel Tower) views of the city, but also for the spectacular Sacré-Coeur Basilica.
Montmartre has a long and storied history of supporting artists and the somewhat less than savory elements of society. Nightclubs, bars and cabarets have had a place here for centuries.
When you visit, take the funicular up the steep hill to not only admire the highest point in Paris, but one of the most eclectic communities in the City of Lights.
Indeed, the views from this hill are quite something – the hike is, too! (and watch your pockets along the way).
Sometimes there are guitarists and singers on the steps of the Basilica. It creates a really great ambiance!
Matt, ever since I saw the movie “Amelie” I have been in love with Montemarte, too, and did the “Amelie” tour of Montemarte on my last visit to Paris! I have a wonderful framed photograph taken by Etienne Atger of Montemarte on a wall in my office. But here’s the big question: where are your photos of Moulin Rouge? Paris’s only vineyard (located in Montemarte)? The charming cafes? Dommage.
Great pics my friend. I missed this on my journey to Paris. Must do next time.
