ETW #45 Sports Inspired Travel

We’re kicking off the New Year with a look at sports related travel. Whether it’s traveling to run in a marathon, go on a buddies golf trip or attend a major sporting event, sports travel has never been more popular. This week we chat with three experts who share their own experiences chasing sports around the world.

You can listen to the podcast here on this page or on any of these services: iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, Stitcher.

The sponsor of this week’s podcast is Allianz Travel Insurance. Visit and see what award-winning travel insurance can do for your next trip.

Although I’m not a sports enthusiast per se, I do understand that for millions of people it’s an important part of why they travel. It’s a very broad style of travel though and runs the gamut from traveling to get exercise, traveling to have fun and even traveling to watch games and matches. I thought that since everyone has their healthy New Year’s resolutions that this would be the perfect time to feature sports travel on the podcast.

Racing Expert – Patrick Kozicky
Patrick is a co-host of the podcast Gays Do the D (a show about all things Disney with an LGBTQ+ perspective.) He’s also an actor in the Minneapolis theater community. He started running 3 years ago and has since completed 4 half marathons, and around 15 shorter distance races from 5ks to 10ks. He recently started writing about his adventures in running, specifically in the annual runDisney events, through his blog PatrickRunsDisney. You can find the Gays Do the D podcast wherever you listen to podcasts as well as on Instagram and Twitter. And you can also find Patrick on his personal Instagram account.

Golf Expert – Robert Silk
Robert Silk is the senior aviation editor for Travel Weekly and also provides coverage of the golf and ski industries for the trade publication. A lifetime avid golfer, Silk has visited close to 40 countries and more than 40 states, and he has been fortunate to golf at courses great and average around the U.S. and in various parts of the world. Prior to joining Travel Weekly in 2015, Silk spent a decade as a local news reporter in the Florida Keys. He also edited the Travel Weekly Florida eNewsletter in 2015 and 2016. An outdoor enthusiast, Silk is author of “An Ecotourist’s Guide to the Everglades and the Florida Keys,” which was published in 2016 by University Press of Florida. In addition, he occasionally still writes the comedic blog about the less-than-simple pleasures of a maddening game.

Travel Events Expert – Cam Wears
Cam and his wife Nicole run the popular family travel blog the Traveling Canucks. They started their blog way back in 2008 while traveling around the world as a couple and during that time have visited more than 75 countries. They returned to Vancouver to start their family, where they still live today. Their site proves that it is possible to have a family, a traditional job and travel the world, all while following your passions. Their story isn’t only amazing, it’s inspirational and you can find them on their site as well as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. You can read all about their Rugby World Cup adventures in Japan by following this link.
