United to Roll Out ConnectionSaver App to More Airports

After a five-month trial run at two of its biggest hubs, United Airlines has decided to expand its new ConnectionSaver app to more airports across the country that are serviced by United.

The app works in two ways. It sends personalized text messages to United passengers with information about their connecting flights—the next gate, how long it will take to get there and nearby amenities.

Southwest Airlines will pull out of Newark Liberty airport on Nov. 3, a move precipitated by the ongoing grounding of the Boeing 737 Max aircraft.

The carrier said Thursday that it has removed its 34 Max aircraft from its schedule until Jan. 5, two months longer than its most recent plan. Those groundings, coupled with the halt in new Max deliveries, will lead to an overall capacity reduction in the 1% to 2% range for Southwest this year, compared with the carrier’s original plan to grow capacity by 5%.

The first time Vern Holaday heard people talk about trying to storm Area 51, he was sitting around a campfire with about a dozen UFO enthusiasts outside the motel he owns in Alamo.

It was the fall of 2009, and the 15-room Alamo Inn was hosting an annual UFO conference. As it usually did, the conversation turned from alien life forms to conspiracy theories about Area 51 — the secretive military facility about 35 miles west of Alamo.
