Virgin Galactic establishing operations in New Mexico
Richard Branson said his commercial spaceflight company, Virgin Galactic, is making its move to New Mexico’s Spaceport America, signaling the final countdown to his long-awaited launch of space tourism.
New Mexico built the $250 million futuristic spaceport for Virgin a decade ago, but — like much of the commercial space industry — the company’s testing and development of the space vehicles needed to begin $250,000-a-head flights took much longer than initially expected.
Government officials in Mexico revealed the invasion of sargassum at Quintana Roo beach destinations would result in a tourism drop of as much as 30 percent this year.
According to MexicoNewsDaily.com, the secretariats of the Environment and Interior said popular destinations Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, Tulum, Cozumel and Isla Mujeres would be impacted by the influx of seaweed approaching the shores.
Southwest Airlines is adding another destination in Hawaii but has not revealed the timing or flight details.
The airline, which began flights to Hawaii in March, plans to offer interisland flights to Hilo International Airport, on the island of Hawaii or “Big Island.” Flights from the mainland to Hilo will not be offered. Travelers will have to connect in Honolulu.
Europe’s rapid rate of tourism growth looks set to slow down over the course of 2019 as fears of a global economic slowdown and political uncertainty start to bite.
Rather than the 6 percent growth recorded in 2018 — or indeed 8 percent in 2017 — the European Travel Commission (ETC) expects a more modest rise of around 3.5 percent in international tourist arrivals this year.
