Carolyn Spencer Brown is editor-at-large of Cruise Critic. A former staff writer with The Washington Post, Spencer Brown has followed the cruise industry for over 20 years and has taken more than 350 cruises, sailing with all of the world’s top cruise lines and many lesser-known lines as well. Regularly quoted by media as an expert on all aspects of cruising — including CNN, The New York Times, Time Magazine and the Associated Press — Spencer Brown has also been named one of the “25 Most Influential Women in Travel” by ForbesLife Magazine.
I took my first cruise as a young professional way back in 2003 and since then have been on many in every corner of the world, from Antarctica to river cruises in Europe. Although it’s not how I always choose to travel, I do enjoy taking one every now and then and am a strong believer that there is indeed a cruise for every type of traveler. If you’re independent, then maybe a small ship expedition cruise is for you but if you want some fun in the sun, then a large ship cruise in the Caribbean is ideal.
