From shopping to tourism, French protests hit economy

Shops shuttered in the run-up to Christmas, chaos on the roads: France’s “yellow vest” protests are dealing a blow to the economy which the finance minister says is no less than a “catastrophe”.

As riots flared in Paris on Saturday, Livio Forte, a tourist from New York, could only watch on as police trucks lined up on the Place Vendome.

The chic square’s luxury jewellery shops were boarded up, the diamonds and watches gone from their windows to protect them from looters.

 

Delta website allows flyers to use miles for seat upgrades

Delta Sky Miles members can now redeem loyalty points for seat upgrades after they book on Delta.com. The carrier will offer the same functionality on its mobile app beginning early next year.

 

Southwest Airlines Hopeful to Begin Service to Hawaii in Early 2019

The road for Southwest Airlines to launch its new service to Hawaii has taken longer than expected, and as a result, many have doubted that the airline would make good on its initial promise to begin selling tickets in 2018 for 2019 departures.

Southwest officials confirmed that timeline in October in an interview with USA Today. But more recent reports have been less optimistic, indicating that Southwest still needs to receive its ETOPS certificate from the FAA – a document that is required for commercial airlines flying long overwater routes – and that the process had been delayed for “up to 90 days.”

 

All signs point to continued growth in luxury travel
