Arizona

Welcome to my Route 66 Daily Roundups. Throughout the course of my cross-country adventure with Marriott International and vehicle sponsor Nissan USA, I will be sharing the highlights from each leg of the trip. To see all of the Daily Roundups please click here.

Day 10: Sedona and the Grand Canyon

Since this is my first time really exploring the Southwest, I wanted to make sure I had enough time to see some of the highlights. Visiting these areas is actually an incredibly important part of the Route 66 experience and always has been. While some of Arizona’s top parks and sights may not be on the Mother Road, travelers have briefly left the route for decades to visit these natural wonders.

Staying at the Flagstaff SpringHill Suites has also been the ideal location from which to launch these explorations. Sedona, the Grand Canyon and more are all an easy drive from the city, which is why so many travelers use Flagstaff as their home base.

My first stop was to the tony but gorgeous community of Sedona. Getting there was part of the fun, because I certainly never expected to find vast pine tree forests next to the desert, but it’s those differences that have made this part of Arizona so popular for so very long. Sedona though is perhaps most famous for the red rock formations surrounding it at every turn, making a simple drive down the street an experience not to be missed.

Naturally, the Grand Canyon needs no introduction and I frankly can’t believe I’ve gone 42 years in life without having visited. I made up for that today, and yes, it’s just as amazing in person as I thought it would be.

Grand Canyon Arizona

What’s also hard for me to believe is that we are almost at the end of this epic journey. Just two more days lay between us and the finish line, but you better believe I’m going to make the most out of those two days.
