Day 6: Amarillo, Texas to Santa Fe, New Mexico
Looking at the map, I thought that day 6 of the drive would be more about transitioning, but it turns out there was a lot to see and do.
What has amazed me more than anything else has been how fast the landscape has changed. Just a couple days ago we were in the Ozarks and today we encountered the red rock buttes of New Mexico.
Leaving Amarillo at a decent hour, we first visited a couple local landmarks before hitting the Mother Road proper. Today was the day when we finally reached the official midpoint of the drive, which gives you an idea of just how long Route 66 is. From there we left Texas and entered New Mexico, driving some dirt roads that were the original version of the drive.
This is my first time in New Mexico and so far it has blown me away. Incredible landscapes coupled with quirky and artsy towns is the perfect mix and it’s also what New Mexico does best.
In Santa Fe I’m staying at the luxury resort, La Posada de Santa Fe – part of the Tribute portfolio of hotels. It’s so close to the historic downtown that exploring this amazing community has been fun and easy. Luckily we are here for two nights giving us plenty of time to explore the region.
