Hurricane Maria strengthened into a Category 2 storm on Monday and pushed toward the Leeward Islands in the eastern Caribbean, as forecasters warned it was expected to become a major hurricane by early Tuesday.
The storm was on a path that would take it near many of the islands already wrecked by Hurricane Irma and then on toward Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Maria could hit Puerto Rico on Wednesday as a Category 3 or 4 hurricane, said Ernesto Morales with the U.S. National Weather Service in San Juan.
Despite Brexit, European Hotel Rates Increase
The travel industry in major European tourist destinations has remained strong despite negative forecasts following the Brexit referendum.
A report released Monday by OTA Insight, the leading hotel revenue management solutions provider, revealed that seven out of eight leading vacation cities have seen significant increases in hotel rates since the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union.
United Airlines will make its last-ever Boeing 747 passenger flight on Nov. 7.
The carrier has added a special “farewell” flight from San Francisco to Honolulu that will serve as its final passenger operation on the beloved jetliner.
IHG names new midscale brand Avid Hotels
InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), which announced a new midscale brand in June, has named the brand Avid Hotels and said the first one will open in early 2019.
Avid Hotels will be sold as a franchise brand and its properties will be designed to have about 100 rooms and require about 1.5 acres. The brand’s average daily rate will be $10 to $15 less than Holiday Inn Express, said IHG.
Holiday Inn Express’ U.S. properties had an average daily rate of $112 a night last year.
