I actually have two photos to highlight today on my list of 2010 favorites. These were taken in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii at the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial. I knew that a visit to the site of the Japanese 1941 attack would be moving, but I was not prepared for the tremendous emotion I felt during my tour.
I love the first photo because it of course captures the patriotism of the memorial, but also the large open spaces spanning the roof and sides of the memorial. There are 21 of these openings and they represent a continuous twenty-one gun salute to the Arizona dead.
The second photo was taken from a helicopter and in this one you can plainly see not only the outline of the sunken ship, but the ‘Tears of the Arizona,” as well. These tears are actually oil slicks still leaking from the wreckage of the Arizona.
