Island Recipe – Goombay Smash

Sandy Toes, Rose Island - Bahamas

As I learned during my brief stay in the Bahamas, mixed drinks are a level of high art in the islands. The king of the Bahamian cocktails though is the Goombay Smash.

Rumor has it that the Smash began at Miss Emily’s Blue Bee Bar in New Plymouth, an island of Green Turtle Cay. Although its origins are murky, the fact that it is one of the official drinks of the Bahamas is crystal clear.  So on a sunny day sit back, sip a Goombay Smash and think about spending time in the Bahamas.

Recipe

Goombay Smash (one of the many variations)

1 oz spiced rum
1 oz coconut rum
2 oz pineapple juice
2 oz orange juice

Pour over ice and garnish with cherries and an orange slice.
