For as long as I can remember, I have always been fascinated with antiquity. Take me to an ancient site or ruin and I am a very happy camper. That is why I knew that when presented with an opportunity to visit one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, there was no way I could refuse.
Located near the popular Turkish destination of Ephesus, the Temple of Artemis is unfortunately a mere shadow of the impressive structure that once stood there.
There were temples on the site dating back to as early as the Bronze Age, but the famous Temple of Artemis was completed around 550 BC. However, this version didn’t last long and was in fact destroyed several times throughout its history. Eventually, arson, flood and earthquake proved too much and the temple was destroyed forever. It wasn’t until the 19th century that the remains were rediscovered.
Even though only a few columns and stones remain, it is humbling to stand on such an ancient and important site and to reflect upon its rich influence in the development of Western civilization.
