Next Trip: Driving the Fairy Tale Route in Germany

Sababurg Germany

I’m excited. Last year, while visiting the city of Kassel in Germany, I had an idea. Inspired by the legacy of the Brothers Grimm in that city I did some research and discovered the Fairy Tale Route, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2015. This 370-mile route starts in Hanau and ends in Bremen, featuring the cities, natural landscapes and landmarks that both celebrate the Brothers Grimm as well as inspired them. I’m happy to say that my own flash of inspiration has become reality and tomorrow I leave to tackle part of what promises to be a beautiful drive.

I’m also excited about how I’m getting there, with Condor Airlines. I didn’t know a lot about this German leisure airline, but their flights out of nearby BWI proved to be the best option for me to fly to Germany. With several direct flights from many North America cities to Germany, it’s a great alternative to the airlines I normally use. Another perk is that I’ll be enjoying their Business Class product en route, experiencing first-hand what it’s like and how it stacks up again rival airlines.

Naturally though, being in Germany again, driving along the Fairy Tale Route is what I’m most excited about doing. The trip is in partnership with the German National Tourism Office and together we spent considerable time putting together a schedule that promises not only to be fun and educational, but a drive that will take me past some of the most beautiful natural landscapes that Germany has to offer. I can’t wait to combine outdoor escapes with my normal penchant for history and culture while I learn as much as I can about the Brothers Grimm.

It’s going to be a busy week, but just some of the many highlights I’m most looking forward to include:

  • Exploring towns and cities like Stein, Hess, Marburg, Hamelin, Bremen and more.
  • Staying at beautiful castles and hotels like the Relais & Chäteaux Hotel “Die Sonne” Frankenberg.
  • Learning all about the Brothers Grimm at the brand new Grimm World in Kassel .
  • Eating as much of that delicious German food I know and love.
  • Plus much more!

I leave Friday night and arrive Saturday morning, hitting the ground running as I jump in my rental car and head towards the Autobahn. Please be sure to follow me for the week as I explore areas of Germany new to me by following the action on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Also be sure to follow the Germany Tourism Instagram account as I take it over for the entire week!

As always, please let me know if you have any questions about the areas I’m visiting OR if you have any recommendations!
