So…was this some kind of special boat? Sorry for being a bit ignorant about the topic, but I’ve never heard of it before.

It was the ship which brought La Fayette to America during the American revolution and spent much of the rest of the time generally kicking ass under the legendary Latouche-Treville. About as special a frigate as you could come across.
