I am pleased to announce that LandLopers is once again joining the massive online fundraising effort known as Passports with Purpose. This year the goal is lofty but simple: raise $80,000 to build two libraries to help the children and communities of two villages in southern and eastern Zambia.
Passports with Purpose is a coordinated effort by hundreds of travel bloggers around the world to give back to areas of the world that need it the most. The effort began in 2008 when they raised $7,500 for Heifer International. In 2010 a remarkable $30,000 was raised in order to build a school in Cambodia and last year people from around the world contributed more than $60,000 to build a village in rural India. A VILLAGE.
This year the stakes have been raised and we need your help. The goal is $80,000 to fund two libraries in Zambia. Monies raised will go to Room to Read and will cover the costs of constructing the buildings, all the library resources such as books and educational materials, teacher training and three years of support. After that, the library is handed over to the government school system.
How do they do this? Well, it’s an ingenious fundraising idea actually. Every time a donor (ahem, you) gives $10, they receive one entry in a drawing for their prize of choice. Vacation packages, hotel stays, fun travel gadgets and many other prizes are up for grabs and you choose the prize for which you want to enter.
The prizes for the fundraiser have been graciously donated by a variety of corporate sponsors, without whom the Passports with Purpose fundraiser would not be possible. For the LandLopers contribution, I am thrilled that the fine people over at BedandBreakfast.com have decided to donate a $500 Gift Card for use at participating U.S. and Canadian properties.
I was a reluctant convert to how great a well done bed and breakfast can really be. I think it was fear more than anything that prevented me from staying at one sooner. Fear of the unknown, fear of quality and fear of giant stuffed animals decorating the beds. I allayed these fears while traveling through New Zealand earlier this year.
I was in Christchurch and booked into a bed and breakfast close to the city center for the evening. I was nervous, I just didn’t know what to expect. As I walked through the door all of my preconceived notions vanished as I entered a clean, well designed villa. The reception staff were very friendly, taking me on a tour of the house and all of the amenities available for my use. I was won over almost immediately by the free Diet Coke in the kitchen fridge. When I opened the old door to my room with the antique key I was shocked. The room was modern, spacious and simply gorgeous. Everything was near perfect, from the fancy bathroom to the comfy bed. The innkeeper brought me some hot chocolate as I hunkered in next to a roaring fire and I was as content as I think I have ever been while traveling. That night was not only one of my best experiences in any lodging, it convinced me instantly that a bed and breakfast isn’t just a great option, it’s a fantastic choice for discerning travelers.
