A couple of weeks ago I spent a day on Grand Bahama Island thanks to the fine folks at Bahamas Tourism, the Grand Lucayan Resort and Vision Airlines in order to learn more about the new direct, low cost air service to this idyllic tropical island.
Starting in early November, Vision Airlines will have direct, nonstop service from the following US airports to Freeport, Grand Bahama Island:
- Baltimore-Washington International Airport
- Louisville International Airport
- Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport
- Richmond International Airport
- Raleigh-Durham International Airport Airport

Before my trip to Freeport, I had never heard of Vision Airlines. Turns out, they started 17 years ago as Vision Air and specialized in the popular tourist flights from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon. Over the years, the company grew its brand and a worldwide fleet of jets, including the Boeing 737-400s they fly down to the Bahamas.
The in-flight service was great, soft drinks and even snacks (gasp) were complimentary and the flight attendants were attentive and had great senses of humor. The best part was the flight time, just two hours to fly from Baltimore to Freeport. That’s less time than it takes to get to some popular shopping spots in Northern Virginia. Except for Ft. Lauderdale, the flying times from the other airports are all about the same.

I fell in love with the Bahamas last year and was excited to explore Freeport. Vision is working closely with the Grand Lucayan Resort, a stunning property with gorgeous views of the warm, tranquil waters surrounding the Bahamas. The resort itself had everything I needed, great food, fantastic pools and of course those views everyone expects. If you’re a more active traveler, there are a variety of activities around the island including traditional water sports, SCUBA diving, horseback riding and even a dolphin encounter.
I’ve long complained about the fact that it’s hard and expensive to get down to the Caribbean for a long weekend, and finally my prayers have been answered. A two hour flight, great prices and luxurious accommodations makes this a great escape for anyone who wants to get away from it all for a few days.

So beautiful pictures. These pics make me fall in love with the Bahamas. I have researched pretty much about the Bahamas islands. Its one of my favorite destinations to go. Wow, the Grand Canyon looks to be a promising adventure and as you mentioned, dolphin encounters, they are a real adventure to overcome in life. Wish i will be at the Bahamas soon. Thanks for this wonderful information on the flights and the services.
