Travel Photo – Oldest Mosaic Map of Jerusalem, Madaba

Jerusalem Map

Jerusalem Map

Located just 30 kilometers from Jordan’s capital, Amman, is Madaba, home of the famous Mosaic Map. Covering the floor of the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George, the map dates from the 6th century and is the oldest surviving mosaic map of the Holy Land. While the entire map is massive, more than 2 million mosaic pieces were used, pictured here is the depiction of what we know today as the Old City of Jerusalem.

The exquisitely detailed depiction of Jerusalem includes the city walls, the Roman cardo or main road and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Having been in Jerusalem, it’s amazing to see this early representation of the Old City.
